We are pleased to offer health and safety professionals an overview of what is involved in purging a biohazard scene along with discussing regulations and suitable documentation. In brief we detail the following: All employers (5 or more employees), by law, must have a policy that will protect employees (amongst others) from bloodborne pathogens (and other discharged body fluids). This policy must include:
  • Risk assessment (at least 5 steps)
  • Decontamination and disinfectant procedures
  • Controlling the risks
  • Sufficient information, instruction and training for employees
  • The role, responsibilities and authority of individuals during an emergency
  • The safety equipment and PPE to be used
  • A competent person: sufficient training - knowledge
  • Sharps policy
  • Safe disposal of biohazardous waste
